Driving

Driving today is not what it used to be. The roads are more crowded with traffic, and everyone seems to be in so much of a hurry to reach their destination.

On top of that, the success of online shopping is causing van traffic to be higher than ever, and medical advances are helping our senior citizens to live - and drive - for longer.

Halving deaths and injuries

So to meet the modern day challenge of keeping us all safe on the road, THINK! is campaigning to contribute to the Government's objective of reducing road deaths and serious injuries by 40 per cent (50 per cent for children) by the year 2010.

In this section, you can read about our various campaigns that relate to driving - Speed: urban and rural, Drink driving, New drivers, Older drivers, Driving for work and Horse sense - and also find some useful advice and tips on how to be a safer driver.

Drink driving
The facts
If you drive at twice the legal alcohol limit you are at least 30 times more likely to cause a road crash, than a driver who hasn't been drinking.

Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. There is no foolproof way of drinking and staying under the limit, or of knowing how much an individual person can drink and still drive safely.

Each person's tolerance to alcohol depends on a range of factors:

weight
gender
age
metabolism
current stress levels
whether they have eaten recently
amount of alcohol
So the only safe option is not to drink alcohol if you plan to drive, and never offer an alcoholic drink to someone else who is intending to drive.

THINK! strategy for drink driving
The THINK! strategy for drink driving is to remind all drivers of the personal consequences of drink driving, and that a drink driving conviction can ruin your life.

Our campaigns focus on the 'moment of doubt' around the second pint, when drivers are considering whether or not to have another drink.
